I’m old my son so what have I learned?

Now my race is run and my candle is burned

My eyes don’t see what they once did

And my ears don’t hear what I am bid

And sometimes my ears don’t hear what I am bid

Oh the women I’ve known who made my heart flutter

My memories spill over like rain from a gutter

The wins and the losses the joy and the pain

The bodies I’ve known ‘gainst which I have lain

I thought through the years how to give this advice

On the meaning of love in your journey through life

But I couldn’t find the words that would make it clear

When I know that the young just don’t want to hear

Please listen my son to my hard won belief

You can’t steal love like a light fingered thief

It has to be given to sweeten your soul

Love is worth nothing if theft is your goal

Yet the greatest thing I have to share

Is that love’s like china and oft needs repair

But if you mend each crack with melted gold

Its beauty increases for all to behold
